The Modern Pantry

The Modern Pantry is a charming restaurant/ pantry located on St John’s Square in the City of London. The Modern Pantry’s philosophy is “The desire to please and excite the palate by fusing everyday cooking with modern ingredients.”

As I stepped inside the restaurant I was welcomed by the smell the fresh ingredients streaming from the kitchen.

Once inside, the environment is clean, fresh and uncluttered, ideal to eat in.

Sugar-cured New Caledonian prawn omelette

The soft, sweet omelette hits your taste buds with a great pairing of fresh spring onion then a kick of smoked chilli. There is certainly a Thai influence in there somewhere, maybe lemon grass? It’s a clean, fresh and wonderful dish.

Grilled tamarind miso marinated onglet steak

Served with cassava chips, smoky apricot relish and salad leaves, the steak was delightful, tender with a light bite,  yet juicy with still enough chew. With a lovely kick from the relish the dish was complete. The cassava chips were a bit dry and under seasoned, but I have not had them before, so with little to compare to, I can’t complain too much. It was a healthy portion size with 5 pieces of steak that I was consuming all too easily. All in all a great steak dish.

The Modern Pantry truffles

The truffles were a delightful end to a wonderful meal. For me, truffles usually have too much flavour and are too sweet, but these were just right, chocolaty with a hint various flavours.

Cookbook

You can even browse the recipes of what you are eating in a restaurant copy of the Modern Pantry Cookbook.

I had a cracking meal at The Modern Pantry and it is one of my top three London Restaurants – Thoroughly recommended!
